JERSEY PARLIAMENT
GUERNSEY HOPE FOR NEW AGREEMENT

Guernsey's Health and Social Services minister is hoping to re-open discussions about the reciprocal health agreement with the UK.

The deal allowing islanders and those from the UK to receive free medical care in either ended on 1 April 2009.

Deputy Hunter Adam said a recent report by the parliamentary select committee opened the door slightly to the possibility of renegotiating the deal.

He said his department would fully pursue any chance of bringing it back.

The report by the Justice Committee concluded the way the deal ended and the lack of consultation was not fair to the Channel Islands.

Currently treatment in Accident and Emergency remains covered, but any care beyond that could lead to a big bill.
